Did you guys ever thought how we came to conclusion that earth takes 365 days to go around the Sun? How man started measuring this and the seasons? All it takes is a simple experiment to measure the shadow of a pole! If the angle between Sunrise and Sunset is 180 degree that is the solstice day and from that day earth is shifting either towards the Sun or away from the Sun.

This happens two times in a year Summer & Winter solstice or Spring & Autumn solstice.

All cultural calendars evolved around that. Throughout the history every culture had their own 365 day calendar (sometimes different days due to errors in observation). Over a period of time they included "patch" versions to correct these errors.

Guy who measured that shadow angle for the first time and realized the significance of it is probably the real scientist. Rest is nonsense.

If you go to Punjab, they don't celebrate Ugadi, but Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telugu people celebrate almost on same day. Tamil people have their own version. So does Bengalis calendar their calendar is very similar to Gregorian version each having 30.5 to 31.5.

There are 50 odd popular almanacs (పంచాంగాలు) in this world. All of them are formed around these solstice days. Every one of these almanacs served its purpose back those days to our ancestors - and it helped them do their harvesting and living. There is no point in bragging that "our almanac" is greatest or is more scientific. None of them are any superior to other.

Cultural curiosity is always good. But cultural arrogance is dangerous. Read history or watch news, there are ample examples to prove this every day.
